On 21st February, 1915, the 16th Lancers of 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division were in trenches to the south-east of Zillebeke near Ypres, when, at 5.30am, about 40 yards of their trench was blown up by mines. The enemy followed this up by swiftly occupying the crater that had been formed and could not be driven out. At 9.10am, a counter attack was launched but by now the enemy were well established in their new positions and could not be dislodged despite the efforts of 16th Lancers who suffered over 50 casualties. One of these was Alfred Jackson who was killed.
